2020 — The « S » Grand Atelier

The « S » Grand Atelier, in Vielsalm, Belgium

The “S” is an arts workshop for handicapped people, which describes itself as being a centre for artistic experimentation, and not for art- or occupational therapy. The staff all have backgrounds in the arts. Thus, it can be said to function as a centre for Outsider artists. Residencies for contemporary artists are organised, during which a common project will be embarked upon with the outsider artists. The “S” is internationally recognized. PDF in French

Thanks to its FranDisco project, the “S” will be participating in an important exhibition on architecture and the built environment in comic books, held at the Basel Cartoon Museum. The artists Marcel Schmitz and Thierry Van Hasselt will be in residence for 2021.

The Guignard Foundation supports this particular project as well as the workshop more generally. Works by “S” artists are donated to the Guignard Foundation, who then pass them on to the Art Brut Collection (ABC). In this way, sixty-six sketches by Joseph Lambert and Jean Leclercq were donated to the Collection in 2020.
